Comparing Working Memory and Problem-Solving Skills in Quran Memorizers and Non-Memorizers

Abstract

Executive functions are a set of higher-order cognitive processes responsible for controlling, monitoring, and regulating goal-directed behaviors. Working memory is one of the fundamental components of the human cognitive system, responsible for the temporary storage and active processing of information during the performance of complex tasks such as reasoning, decision-making, learning, and problem solving. Problem solving, as one of the most complex cognitive abilities, requires the simultaneous activation of several mental processes, including working memory, attention, mental representation, and critical thinking.The present study aimed to compare working memory and problem-solving ability between individuals who have memorized the entire Quran and ordinary individuals. The study population consisted of two independent groups: registered full Quran memorizers listed in the central Dar-al-Quran database of Tehran Province, and a control group of non-memorizers matched for age and educational level. Participants were selected through convenience and voluntary sampling. Working memory was assessed using the Daneman and Carpenter Working Memory Test, and problem-solving ability was measured by the Heppner Problem-Solving Inventory.The findings indicated that Quran memorizers demonstrated significantly higher performance in both working memory and problem-solving indices compared to the control group. These results suggest that memorizing the Holy Quran may contribute to the enhancement of working memory and problem-solving abilities. The findings of this research can be applied in designing educational and training interventions aimed at improving working memory and problem-solving skills at both individual and societal levels
