Education, as the foundation of human development, requires the use of complementary capacities to enhance the quality of learning, and teacher assistants can play an effective role in this regard. This qualitative study, conducted using the meta-synthesis method, aimed to identify the advantages and challenges of employing teacher assistants in Iran’s educational system. The research population consisted of studies conducted over the past twenty years (2004–2025), from which 90 studies were screened and 28 articles were purposefully selected and analyzed. The findings revealed that the role of teacher assistants in Iranian schools is multidimensional and can be explained through eight main categories: educational interactions and communication, support and facilitation of the learning process, strategies for improving teaching and learning quality, participation in curriculum design and implementation, professional development and empowerment, organizational role and position, challenges and barriers, and outcomes and consequences of teacher assistant deployment. The results indicate that teacher assistants can contribute to reducing teachers’ workload, improving instructional quality, and supporting students with special needs; however, limited professional coordination, insufficient specialized training, financial constraints, and ambiguity in organizational positioning hinder the full utilization of their potential. These findings highlight the need for policy revision, clear job descriptions, and supportive mechanisms to ensure the effective integration of teacher assistants in Iranian schools.
