This study aimed to investigate the effect of basic psychological needs and levels of motivation on academic procrastination of university students. The present research method is also considered a correlational research in terms of method. 548 students were selected from the faculties of Ayatollah Amoli Islamic Azad University through stratified sampling. Three instruments were used to collect information: Procrastination Questionnaire (1984), Basic Psychological Needs Instrument (2000), and Academic Motivation Instrument. Structural equation modeling is used to analyze data in this study. Amos software under Windows 8 was used. The significance level of this study was selected by reviewing the research background (α = 0.05). The findings showed that for all students (n = 548), about eight percent of the variance in students' procrastination was explained by the model variables. The results showed that the standard beta of the path from basic psychological needs to intrinsic motivation, the path from basic psychological needs to intrinsic motivation, the path from amotivation to academic procrastination, the path from intrinsic motivation to academic procrastination, the path from extrinsic motivation to academic procrastination, and the path from extrinsic motivation to academic procrastination were significant between male and female students. However, the standard beta of the path from basic psychological needs to extrinsic motivation was not significant for male and female students. The Moderate role of the amotivation variable in the relationship between basic psychological needs and procrastination was confirmed.
